Michelle Morrison works for Brunette the Label’s sister company, Brunette Showroom, as a sales representative for brands like BB Dakota, Cupcakes and Cashmere, Articles of Society and our newest brand, Smash + Tess! She also helps to make sure things are running smoothly in the showroom, and manages our Instagram account. Something the entire Brunette team seems to have in common is a love for animals, and Michelle is no different! She loves spending her time out of the office with her favourite pony, Simon, along with her pets Olive the cat and Annie the dog. Michelle has been a very welcome presence on our team with her warmth and kindness, and we’re so excited for you to learn more about her!
What does babes supporting babes mean to you?
Babes Supporting Babes means you have no judgment, no matter who you come across. You’re there to support and spread positive vibes!
If you could choose your nickname, what would it be?
Mickey, my mom always called me Mickey growing up, but it never stuck with my friends!
What’s your spirit animal?
A horse. I’m more introverted and independent and growing up riding and being around horses I identify with their kind nature and freeness.
What’s your proudest babe moment or achievement?
My proudest babe moment would have to be when I stepped away from what I thought I was supposed to be doing with my life and started actually living my life how I wanted to. It’s not always easy to stand up for yourself and unapologetically do what you really want to do. Since then I’ve built my career in the fashion industry and ended up here with this amazing team at Brunette the Label, and I couldn’t be happier!
What is the most unexpected thing you have in your purse or wallet?
Hmm…a poop bag. You don’t want to be “that” dog owner!
Tell us about a time where you were faced with a situation that you could have been unkind, but chose to be a babe instead?
Unfortunately, in our generation I feel like you’re put in these situations all too often. There’s always so much judgment and discrimination especially with the influence of social media. I always try to hold my head high and dust it off no matter what people may be saying. At the end of the day they’re the ones who are insecure or struggling and it pays to react with kindness and respect.
What product would you seriously stockpile if you found out they weren’t selling it anymore?
Saje anything! Their Bare Face makeup remover is bomb! It’s a new product and I’m already obsessed!
If you had a yacht, what would be the name of it?
The Runaway, it was the name of my dad’s boat when I was little and I would love to re-live those days!
What was the best piece of advice you received when you were first starting your career?
Don’t be afraid to toot your own horn. You need to humbly celebrate your successes and make it known you’re working hard to be where you are. It’s not always obvious. Getting that promotion could depend on voicing how valuable you are!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received now that you’re in your career?
Delegate tasks, one person can’t be and do everything and that’s why you have a team. You have people who are there to support you if you need help.
Red, white, or rose?
White or rose.
When I dance I look like….
Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Who do you channel when you’re about to do something that scares you?
My mom. She’s such a strong independent woman who has been through so much and I know that she’s passed on that strength to me. #GirlPower
What’s your favourite destination to visit?
So far, India. There’s so much culture and the people treat you like family. There’s so much to explore and it’s incredibly beautiful!
What’s your favourite meal to eat?
A really good gooey homemade Mac + Cheese. I’ll also take Burgoo’s Mac + Cheese any day!
What’s the most fulfilling part of your career?
Getting to work with great people and help their business thrive and grow! I love seeing the stores that we sell to have success with our brands. And also seeing our brands succeed! It’s a great feeling to know you can have that impact.
Where’s your favourite place to draw inspiration from?
I have so many creative people in my life. I definitely get a lot of inspo from my friends.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Ice cream! Earnest, Rain or Shine, Mister, Umaluma…I love a good ice cream spot!
What quality are you working on yourself right now?
To look after myself more. I’m such a people pleaser and have a hard time saying “no.” I’ll wear myself out trying to do things for others, I need to learn to take a step back and do what’s best for me from time to time.
What’s the biggest hurdle you’ve had to overcome in business?
Finding my voice. As mentioned above I’m a people pleaser, I don’t like to disappoint or cause any discomfort, so I often won’t voice my opinion if it may not align with others. I know I have a lot to offer and it’s something I’ve been working on.
Coffee meeting or drinks meeting?
Drinks, I love a good happy hour meeting.
If you’re going out for a cocktail you’d order…
A Moscow Mule or Margarita.
If you had unlimited budget for 2 hours of shopping where would you go?
What’s your favourite movie?
Grease. I love a good musical and it never gets old!
